How to Convert Salary to Hourly

The math is simpler than most people expect. Take your annual salary and divide it by the number of hours you work in a year.

A full-time job is usually counted as 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. That’s 2,080 hours a year, so the formula looks like this:

Hourly wage = Annual salary ÷ 2,080

Say you’ve been offered $60,000 a year:

$60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour

Need a quick estimate in your head? Drop the last three zeros and cut the number in half. $60,000 becomes 60, and half of that is $30. It’s a little high, but close enough for a gut check. Use the calculator above when you need the exact figure.

Not on a 40-hour schedule? Change the hours per week in the calculator and it will redo the math for you.

What Changes Your Real Hourly Rate

Dividing by 2,080 gives you the textbook answer. Your real hourly rate can be quite different, and it usually comes down to one of these three things.

You work more than 40 hours a week

Many salaried employees work longer weeks with no extra pay. If you earn $60,000 and regularly put in 50 hours, you’re really making $23.08 an hour, not $28.85. That’s 20% less, and it’s worth knowing before you compare a salaried job with an hourly one.

You only get paid for part of the year

Paid vacation and paid holidays don’t change your hourly rate, because your salary already covers them. Unpaid time off does. If you earn $60,000 over the year but only work 50 weeks of it, open Advanced options and set paid weeks to 50. Your hourly rate goes up to $30.00, because the same pay is spread over fewer hours. This matters most for contractors and seasonal workers.

Your employer counts hours differently

Not every payroll system uses 2,080 hours. Some use 2,088, because 2026 has 261 weekdays instead of 260. Others use 1,950 hours for a 37.5-hour week. If the hourly rate on your pay stub is a few cents off from ours, this is usually why.

Salaried vs. Hourly: What’s the Difference?

Both ways of being paid have trade-offs. Here’s how they usually compare in the U.S.:

 SalariedHourly
How you’re paidA fixed amount each pay periodFor every hour you work
OvertimeUsually none if your job is classified as exempt1.5× your rate for hours over 40 in a week (non-exempt workers)
PaycheckThe same every timeGoes up and down with your hours
BenefitsMore likely to include health insurance, paid time off and a 401(k)Varies a lot; more common in full-time hourly roles
Work hoursYou’re expected to get the job done, even if that means longer daysA clear line between work time and your own time

Being salaried doesn’t automatically mean you can’t get overtime. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime depends on your job duties and how much you earn, not just on how you’re paid. The U.S. Department of Labor’s overtime page explains who qualifies.

When you’re comparing two job offers, put them in the same unit first. A $55,000 salary sounds like more than $25 an hour, but $25 × 2,080 is $52,000. The gap is only $3,000, and the hourly job pays overtime if you stay late.

Biweekly vs. Semi-Monthly Pay

These two sound alike but they aren’t the same. Biweekly means you’re paid every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year. Semi-monthly means twice a month, usually on the 15th and the last day, which is 24 paychecks a year.

Here’s how a $60,000 salary splits each way:

  • Biweekly: $2,307.69 per paycheck, 26 times a year
  • Semi-monthly: $2,500.00 per paycheck, 24 times a year

You earn the same over the year either way. Biweekly checks are smaller, but twice a year you get three paychecks in one month. A lot of people put that extra check straight into savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my annual salary to an hourly wage?

Divide your annual salary by 2,080, which is 40 hours a week times 52 weeks. If you work a different number of hours, multiply your weekly hours by 52 and divide by that instead.

How many working hours are in a year?

A standard full-time year has 2,080 working hours. Because 2026 has 261 weekdays, some employers use 2,088 hours, which turns a $60,000 salary into $28.74 an hour instead of $28.85.

$50,000 a year is how much an hour?

$50,000 a year is about $24.04 an hour, based on 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year.

$75,000 a year is how much an hour?

$75,000 a year is about $36.06 an hour for a standard full-time schedule.

$100,000 a year is how much an hour?

$100,000 a year works out to about $48.08 an hour at 40 hours a week.

Is the hourly rate before or after taxes?

It’s before taxes. This calculator shows your gross pay, so your take-home pay per hour will be lower once federal, state and payroll taxes come out.

Should I subtract vacation days?

Only if they’re unpaid. Paid vacation and holidays are already part of your salary, so leave paid weeks at 52. Lower it only for time off you don’t get paid for.
